Function Of Encoder in Motor Operation

An encoder is not a conventional electrical protection device for motor operation; instead, it is a speed and position monitoring unit. It mainly collects real-time signals of motor speed, rotor position and operating status to indirectly realize equipment protection, process protection and operational safety protection. It is widely used for variable-speed motors, servo motors, large high-voltage motors and high-precision continuous-operation equipment.

The primary function of the encoder is protection against abnormal speed conditions. It monitors the actual motor speed in real time and accurately detects faults such as overspeed, underspeed, zero speed and runaway. If the speed exceeds the limit due to out-of-control load, brake failure or faults in the speed control system, the system can trigger an alarm, reduce speed or trip for shutdown in a timely manner. This prevents mechanical fracture, equipment collision and runaway accidents caused by overspeed, effectively protecting the motor mechanical structure and connected load equipment.

Secondly, it enables stall and slip monitoring protection. For motors applied to belt drives, roller tables and hoisting equipment, it can rapidly detect hidden faults including energized motor operation with stationary load, rotor seizure and transmission slip. It compensates for the limitation of ordinary current protection which cannot accurately identify minor stall and mechanical slip, and prevents motor overheating and damage resulting from long-term abnormal stress.

Meanwhile, the encoder provides precise phase sequence and position control protection. It feeds back rotor position accurately to ensure precise controllability during motor startup, commutation, forward and reverse rotation. It avoids equipment collision, impact and false reverse operation caused by phase sequence deviation and positioning errors, protecting mechanical equipment and production process safety.

In summary, its core function is to achieve indirect protection against mechanical faults, operational runaway and process abnormalities through accurate speed and position monitoring, so as to improve the operational stability and safety of the motor.
